    Sir Roger Penrose Receives ‘Bhaumik Prize’ in Consciousness Research at Tucson Conference

    Newswise — The first ‘Mani Bhaumik award’ for consciousness research was presented to Sir Roger Penrose at the 20th anniversary ‘Toward a Science of Consciousness’ conference in Tucson, Arizona. Penrose, the esteemed British physicist renowned for work on general relativity, quantum mechanics, cosmology and consciousness, shared the 1988 Wolf Prize for mathematics with Stephen Hawking for understanding of black holes and the universe.

    Applications Invited by NIAS Consciousness Studies Programme for Short-term Research Grants

    NIAS (National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore) is once again inviting applications for the NIAS-Mani Bhaumik short term research fellowships (starting 1st December 2014) for the Programme of Consciousness Studies. Last date to apply is 21st November 2014. The Areas for Research are: Neuron Models and Complex Dynamics; Physics and Consciousness; Communication and Cognition in Nonhuman Species and the Evolution of Consciousness; and, Self and Consciousness in Philosophy and Psychology (including Indian philosophy and psychology).


    Application deadline is 21st November 2014.

    LASIK History

    The LASIK technique was made possible by the Colombia-based Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, who, around 1950 in his clinic in Bogotá, Colombia, developed the first microkeratome, and developed the technique used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure he called keratomileusis. Barraquer also researched the question of how much of the cornea had to be left unaltered to provide stable long-term results.
